The Tipton County Democratic Party will host a meet-and-greet for candidates in the newly redrawn 5th Congressional District on Thursday night.
The event gives residents a chance to meet four of the Democrats running in the district’s Aug. 6 primary: Yolanda Cooper-Sutton, Chaz Molder, Carrie Iacomini and Brighton native Devante Hill. Organizers are billing it as a casual gathering with snacks and conversation rather than a formal forum.
Where is District 5?
Until this year, Tipton County was divided between the 8th and 9th districts, but the new state map signed into law in May 2026 redrew those lines again.
The 9th District, which previously took in part of Tipton County, no longer reaches the county. The redrawn 5th District now runs from Middle Tennessee west along the Mississippi River through Dyer and Lauderdale counties, taking in half of Tipton County before ending in downtown Memphis. The remainder of the county falls in the redrawn 8th District, represented by David Kustoff.

The Democratic primary also includes Rachel Hurley.
Incumbent Congressman Andy Ogles, who is endorsed by Donald Trump, is facing challenger Charlie Hatcher in the Republican primary.
Campaign stops in Tipton County
Tipton County has only been in the 5th Congressional District since May, which hasn’t given candidates or voters much time to get to know one another.
Hatcher held a campaign event for Tipton County’s voters on July 12.
Molder visited Munford’s Mount Zion Bakery on May 22 on a driving tour of the new District 5.
Hill grew up in Tipton County and is a 2010 graduate of Brighton High School.
The meet-and-greet is the first time some of the candidates have met with voters in Tipton County.
The event will take place at Los Alebrijes (114 Atoka-Munford Ave., Atoka) on Thursday, July 30 at 6:30 p.m.
