General Assembly passes redrawn congressional map — what’s next for Tipton County?

The Tennessee General Assembly passed a new congressional map Thursday. Here’s what it means for Tipton County.

The approval process

The map passed both chambers and now goes to Gov. Lee’s desk. He is expected to sign it, at which point it takes effect immediately.

How our representatives voted

State Rep. Debra Moody and State Sen. Paul Rose — the legislators who actually represent Tipton County in Nashville — both voted yes. U.S. Congressmen Cohen and Kustoff do not have a vote on state redistricting maps.

What’s next for Tipton County

Tipton County will be split. The eastern half stays in District 8. The western half moves to District 5, currently represented by Congressman Andy Ogles.

Who is Andy Ogles?

Ogles served as Maury County mayor before winning his congressional seat in 2022. He is a member of the House Freedom Caucus and is running for a third term.

Speaking of third terms

Ogles introduced a resolution in January 2025 to amend the Constitution to allow Donald Trump to run for a third term. He has also sponsored bills on immigration, abortion access, and culture war issues.

Reactions to redistricting

Ogles: “To my new district: I will be your America First warrior in Congress.” (NYT) // Cohen: “It’s a terrible day for Memphis and a terrible day for Tennessee.” (Daily Memphian)

Cohen also announced his plans to file a lawsuit.

What about the election?

In District 5, Ogles faces Republican challengers Charlie Hatcher and Micheal O’Leary in the Aug. 6 primary. Five Democrats are running, led by Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder and Metro Nashville Councilmember Mike Cortese. The redrawn map is likely to shore up Republican support in the district.

In District 9, Steve Cohen, Justin J. Pearson, DeVante Hill, and Charlotte Bergmann are among those running. State Sen. Brent Taylor (R-Memphis) announced his intention to run hours after the map passed.
