Led by Barry Trobaugh, Memphis Wind Symphony brings free concert to Veterans Plaza

The Memphis Wind Symphony will perform a free outdoor concert at Veterans Plaza on Tuesday night, and they will be led by someone who is no stranger to Munford.

Barry Trobaugh, the retired Director of Bands at Munford High School, serves as the Memphis Wind Symphony’s Musical Director and Conductor.

Under his direction at MHS, the band earned three Tennessee State Championships and the USBands Group VI National Championship in 2011, performed in the 2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, and marched in the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif. Trobaugh was twice named Teacher of the Year at Munford High School and was a West Tennessee Teacher of the Year finalist in 2016.

The Memphis Wind Symphony is a not-for-profit wind ensemble based in the Greater Memphis area. Its 65 members – flutists, oboists, clarinetists, saxophonists, brass players, and percussionists – rehearse weekly and perform throughout the region year-round. The repertoire spans a wide range of styles, from traditional wind ensemble literature and classical transcriptions to big band and pop selections, and the group performs in concert halls, community spaces, and outdoor venues.

As a non-profit, the ensemble’s mission centers on access: bringing live music to all corners of the community while giving talented local musicians a meaningful performance outlet.

Tuesday’s free concert in Munford reflects that mission directly. Trobaugh first joined the Memphis Wind Symphony in 1985 as a French horn player before eventually moving to the podium. The concert brings him back to the community he long served – this time, leading the musicians rather than teaching the students.

The event, hosted by the City of Munford, was originally scheduled earlier this spring before being postponed due to weather. Organizers encourage attendees to bring lawn chairs.

Three food trucks will be on site: Yummy Sourdough Pizza, Beauty and the Feast, and Pour Palomino.

The concert begins at 6:30 p.m.
