Covington Public Safety Committee

The Covington Public Safety Committee meets at 4 p.m. to review March 2026 activity from both the police and fire departments.

The Covington Police Department logged 2,284 calls for service in March with one position remaining vacant. Officers Hammond and Tyson graduated from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy during the month. CPD presented cases resulting in 14 indictments on 44 charges at the Tipton County Grand Jury, submitted a DOJ Violent Crime Grant — which the BMA approved March 17 — and completed an auction of seized firearms with a winning bid of $7,175. The department is 77.77 percent through its annual budget, with social media reach of 2,773,869 across 69 posts in March.

The Covington Fire Department responded to 179 calls from April 22 through May 20 and is 77.08% through its budget year to date, with 930 total calls since January 1. The department has two open positions, a firefighter/AEMT and a fire inspector. All severe weather sirens are operational and Engine-3 has passed its final inspection. The fire inspector completed 15 annual fire inspections, 8 final fire and life safety inspections and 3 business inspections for certificates of occupancy or beer permits during the reporting period.

The committee will also consider a $51,289.83 roofing contract for the CID building at 300 W. Church Street, the full insurance payout from PEP after wind and storm damage, with a $5,000 deductible leaving a city balance of $46,289.83. James Russell Roofing & Restorations was selected with a 15-year warranty. The committee will receive a DOJ grant update and authorize the $7,175 firearm sale to the highest bidder, Darrell Yarbro.

Munford Library Board

The Library Board holds its monthly meeting.

Munford Board of Mayor and Aldermen

5:30 p.m. — City Board Room, 70 College St., Munford

The Munford Board of Mayor and Aldermen will also hold its regular meeting Tuesday, rescheduled from Monday to avoid the Memorial Day holiday and moved up one hour to 5:30 p.m. from the board’s normal 6:30 p.m. start time.

The board’s headline item is the final vote on Ordinance 2026-04-01, adopting the city’s annual budget and tax rate for fiscal year 2027, which begins July 1. The proposed budget appropriates $6,439,828 from the general fund and projects a surplus of $15,866. The property tax rate is set at $1.0675 per $100 of assessed value. The ordinance passed its first reading in April.

Aldermen will also vote on second readings of five ordinances amending the current fiscal year’s budgets for the general operating fund, State Street Aid fund, Drug Fund, Scholarship Fund and Solid Waste Fund.

In new business, the board will consider Resolution 2026-05-01, requesting the Tipton County Election Commission call a municipal election for November 3, 2026. Three alderman seats are on the ballot, each for a four-year term.

Mayor Dwayne Cole will also present the May Yard of the Month recognition to Ronnie and Holley Kiihnl of 267 Wooten Oaks Circle.
