More than 300 Tipton County servicemembers died while serving the United States across six conflicts, from the Mexican War in the 1840s through the Vietnam era.
Their names are preserved on a memorial at the Tipton County Veterans Museum on Bert Johnston Avenue in Covington, a permanent record of the price this community has paid.
The Civil War alone claimed well over 200 men with Tipton County ties. World War II took more than 60. Sixteen Tipton Countians were killed during the Vietnam conflict, and eight died during Korea.
The names on that memorial are not abstractions. They are fathers, brothers, and sons whose deaths shaped families and neighborhoods in this county for generations. Names like Thomas L. Gaines Jr., killed in Vietnam. Darrow A. Rose, killed in Korea. Alfred Naifeh and Billy Farrow Cobb, lost in World War II. Clark Adams and Jesse G. Hunt, killed in World War I.
The Tipton County Veterans Museum holds those names and the stories behind them. Open Tuesday through Friday, the museum at 751 Bert Johnston Ave. is free to visit and staffed by people committed to making sure these men are not forgotten.
They have chronicled some of their stories through the use of their Veterans Log.
Memorial Day was established not as a day off, but as a day of remembrance. The following men from Tipton County died while in service to the country during wartime.
