Three Covington residents have been arrested following an investigation into the alleged abuse of a 1-year-old child, according to the Covington Police Department.

Wesley Young, 35, Brittney Young, 31, and Brooklynn Bowens, 20, were charged with aggravated child abuse and child abuse and neglect.

Police said the investigation began Sept. 18 after a concerned citizen noticed severe bruising on the 1-year-old and alerted officers. The report prompted a welfare check at a residence in the 100 block of Elm Street, where police said the three adults lived together.

Detectives with the Covington Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and staff from the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services conducted a joint follow-up investigation.

According to police, investigators found evidence of ongoing abuse in the household. DCS subsequently removed the 1-year-old and two other children, ages 6 months and 8 years, from the residence.

Wesley Young and Brittney Young were each given a $75,000 bond. Police said Bowens was being held pending an appearance before a judge.

All three are scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. Oct. 6 in Tipton County General Sessions Court before Judge M.O. Eckel III.

The investigation remains ongoing.

“If you suspect a child is being abused, neglected, or exposed to violence, please contact the Covington Police Department or the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services immediately,” Covington Police Chief Donna Turner said. “Reports can be made 24/7, and callers may remain anonymous. Protecting vulnerable children is a responsibility our entire community shares.”
