Severe weather season is here, and many Tipton County residents ask the same question during storms: Where can I go if I need a safe place to shelter?
Tipton County has several public tornado safe rooms designed to provide protection during tornado warnings. These shelters are built to FEMA standards and are intended for short-term emergency protection when a tornado warning is issued.
Here are the currently designated public shelters in Tipton County:
𝗔𝘁𝗼𝗸𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹
334 Atoka-Munford Ave., Atoka
• Opens when a tornado watch is issued
• Entrance is at the police department on the west side of the building
• Staff will be present once a tornado warning is issued
• Service animals only
𝗔𝘁𝗼𝗸𝗮 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹
870 Rosemark Road, Atoka
• Safe room located on the north side of the building
• During school hours, it is reserved for students and staff
• Open to the public after school hours during tornado warnings

• No early arrivals or extended stays
• No food, drinks, alcohol, tobacco, vape products or weapons
• No pets except documented service animals
• Capacity may be limited and access is not guaranteed
The Apostolics of Drummonds New Beginnings Church
The Apostolics of Drummonds, located at 2357 Wilkinsville Road, often open their doors during storms. They take a small number of people. No pets.
These facilities are intended to give residents a safer option than being in vehicles or mobile homes during severe weather.
