Covington Main Street has received 2026 National Accreditation from Main Street America, a designation awarded to downtown revitalization programs that meet nationally recognized performance standards.
What accreditation means
Main Street America grants National Accreditation each year to local programs that demonstrate strong organizational practices, broad community support, and a commitment to preservation-based economic development.
The designation means Covington Main Street has met professional standards in areas such as planning, volunteer engagement, financial management, and economic development. It also strengthens the organization’s access to grant opportunities, technical assistance, and other resources available through the Main Street America network.
Communities use those resources to support building rehabilitation, streetscape improvements, business recruitment, and other efforts aimed at strengthening historic downtown districts.
A milestone for a new program
The accreditation is notable because Covington became a Tennessee Main Street community in 2024, making it one of the state’s newer downtown revitalization programs.
“It is incredibly exciting to help shape a new Main Street program from the ground up while investing in the future of Historic Downtown Covington,” said Stephanie Pugh, executive director of Covington Main Street. “This accreditation is an important first step that shows our community is committed to preserving what makes downtown special while building new opportunities for businesses, residents and visitors.”
How the Main Street program works
Main Street America uses a nationally recognized revitalization framework built around four areas of focus – organization, promotion, design, and economic vitality.
Programs across the country use the model to support local businesses, improve public spaces, and strengthen local economies while preserving the historic character of their downtowns.
Work underway in downtown Covington
Covington Main Street’s efforts so far have included community conversations, downtown events, beautification projects funded through the Downtown Improvement Grant and a business support initiative called Mornings with Covington Main Street.
The organization is also developing a long-term strategic plan for the historic district.
Pugh said the accreditation marks the beginning of the program’s work.
“We are only beginning this journey, and there is so much potential ahead for our downtown,” she said.
Covington Main Street’s mission is to strengthen and celebrate Historic Downtown Covington by supporting local businesses, preserving its historic character and creating events and experiences that bring the community together.
