This week in local government: June 1-5, 2026

Eight local government bodies are scheduled to meet this week across Tipton County, with the busiest days falling Monday and Tuesday, as county committees, Covington city boards and the Gilt Edge town government all convene.

The Covington Public Works Committee has posted an agenda for Tuesday’s 4 p.m. meeting; no other agendas had been posted as of early Monday.

Monday, June 1

The Tipton County Finance Committee opens the week at 4:30 p.m. at the Administration Building, 103 E Pleasant Ave., Covington. The committee meets the first Monday of every month and handles budget and financial matters for county government.

The Tipton County Public Works Committee meets at 6 p.m. at the EMA Building, 8629 Highway 51 S, Brighton. The committee oversees roads, infrastructure and county public works operations.

The Gilt Edge Board of Mayor and Aldermen holds its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. The board meets the first Monday of each month.

Tuesday, June 2

Three Covington boards convene Tuesday at City Hall, 200 W. Washington Ave.

The Covington Municipal-Regional Planning Commission is scheduled to meet at noon in the Lower Level Conference Room. The commission meets the first Tuesday of each month and handles site plan reviews, subdivision plats and land use recommendations.

The Covington Public Works Committee meets at 4 p.m. in the Lower Level Conference Room. The agenda covers a wide range of utility and infrastructure updates.

The city’s water department will report on a lead service line inventory contract covering 3,000 lines whose material is currently unknown, a federal compliance requirement under EPA’s lead pipe rules. The department is also advancing a $1,038,000 disaster grant from 2022 to fund a new water treatment plant generator; the design is in progress and a contract has been submitted to USDA for approval.

On the sewer side, a Hwy. 59 sewer line extension is under construction, wastewater clarifier upgrades have materials on-site awaiting installation and screw pump installation has begun pending new bolts.

The gas department is presenting documentation on a new vehicle purchase — a 2026 Chevrolet Traverse LT acquired from Carl Black Chevrolet in Nashville for $43,847.55.

For streets, Holy Grove Road paving is scheduled to begin the second week of June. The Hwy. 51 sidewalk project remains on hold, awaiting a notice to proceed from TDOT, and a traffic signal modernization grant is pending approval.

The code enforcement department will report on ongoing blight grant work at five properties: 1099 Simonton St., an old store on Simonton St., 506 W. Ripley Ave., 718 Douglas St. and signs on Hwy. 51. A separate property maintenance matter is under review by the city attorney; the property owner committed in May to begin cleanup and complete demolition of a structure by Christmas.

The Covington Historic Zoning Committee is set to meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Second Floor Board Room. The committee reviews applications for work within the city’s historic district.

Thursday, June 4

Two bodies meet Thursday.

The Munford General Welfare, Public Works and Mayor’s Cabinet committees convene jointly at 4 p.m. in the City Courtroom, 70 College St., Munford. The first-Thursday committee sessions are Munford’s regular working meetings ahead of the full Board of Mayor and Aldermen session, which meets the fourth Monday of the month.

The Covington Board of Zoning Appeals is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Second Floor Board Room of City Hall. The BZA meets the first Thursday after the first Tuesday of each month, but convenes only when applications for variances or appeals have been filed. No agenda had been posted as of publication.
