One week after a fatal wreck in the Brighton work zone, the concrete barriers that reduced traffic to one lane were removed.

The construction project will be delayed for several months due to a challenge with relocating utilities, sources said Tuesday.

In mid-August, concrete barriers were put up in the right lane of Highway 51 South, between Old Hwy. 51 and Myron Creek, in preparation for work that would add turning lanes at the Tipton County Landfill. The work was expected to wrap up at Thanksgiving.

Following the accident, many people complained on social media about the timing of the project as well as the visibility when exiting the landfill. There have reportedly been six accidents in the work zone since the barriers went up three weeks ago.

Despite that, the utility relocation is the reason the project will be pushed back.

County and state leaders have worked with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to have the barriers removed until the project resumes. It is not yet known when that may happen.

The only TDOT construction project currently in progress in Tipton County is the widening of Hwy. 14 near the Tipton-Shelby line.
